We’ve recently talked about pick your own fruit and vegetables but, at this time of year, you can also cut your own dahlias at Finchley Nurseries.
It’s a real pleasure to pop along to this hidden gem tucked in the valley between Mill Hill and Totteridge. The location couldn’t be more bucolic looking north across farmland dotted with cattle – it’s difficult to believe this stretch of countryside is closer to central London than Chipping Barnet. The Green Belt literally wraps around our northern tentacle of London.
Our most recent visit was on Sunday on one of the nursery’s ‘Band Days’ with entertainment from Morris dancers and the Barnet Band. Basking in the sunshine and enjoying tea and cake from the Summer House café, late summer treats don’t get much better than this. However, even on a cloudy day, the cheerful spectacle of the dahlia field against the pastures is a sight to behold.
What’s more, family run Finchley Nurseries is a welcome contrast to the corporate feel of the big chains, with plenty of helpful staff to talk you through their extensive range or to give gardening advice. Alternatively, just use it as an opportunity to take some time out in a soothing oasis. A local treasure.
