Poisson Fishmongers

We’re days away from our summer holiday in France and looking forward to some decent fruits de mer, so it seems timely to write about excellent Cockfosters fishmongers, Poisson.

Chatting to passionate owner Carol Arnold, it was interesting hearing how Poisson was established in 1959 by her father, and she clearly recalls early trips to Billingsgate. Her son Ross now runs fish wholesalers Stickleback.

As well as stocking market-fresh seafood, there are plenty of delicacies on offer too. Shelves are lined with interesting ingredients and it’s well worth checking the freezers – on my last visit I picked up a large bag of squid rings and some garlic-stuffed snails (our daughter loves them!) Sustainability is key at Poisson. Most of the fish is ‘day-boat fish’, fish landed by small boats and caught mainly on the south coast of England during short day and night expeditions. However, they also source a wide variety of ‘exotic species’ from around the world and sushi grade salmon and tuna are always in stock. There are also a number of ready-prepared items from their own kitchens such as salads, sauces and their delicious fish cakes.

Carol and her team are happy to advise and a well-leaved Rick Stein fish cookery book is on display if you need some inspiration. Special orders can be placed (requiring two to three days’ notice) and they offer a comprehensive catering service for parties and events.

Opening hours:
Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 6pm.
