It might be frosty out there, but that’s no excuse to turn down the offer of trying some top-quality ice cream.
Once I’d cleared the windscreen, I headed round to Fold Farm in Arkley to see Daniel Lewis and taste the current range of Lewis of London ice cream and answer a few questions in the name of market research. Although summery flavours like the clean, pure tasting strawberries and cream are still a real treat, richer, more decadent options hit the spot this time of year.
The range is so good it’s difficult to choose your favourites, but mine included hazelnut and the marzipan-like pistachio and almond which would both be fabulous with mince pies and Christmas pudding. Other highlights were chunky chocolate, mint choc chip, rum and raisin (usually disappointingly fake tasting) and a personal favourite, salted caramel. Tropical fruit comes into its own during winter months and their lush, fragrant alphonso mango was suitably exotic. Even with a flurry of snow, all these ice creams tasted great.
For the winter season, the farm shop is open at weekends from 10am to 4pm and, as well as offering the ice cream and their excellent halloumi cheese, they are taking orders for Christmas turkeys.
