Finchley Symphony Orchestra play Elgar, Mozart and Sibelius

18th November 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:45 pm

£18

‘Froissart’ is the first large-scale piece Elgar wrote for full orchestra. Inspired by the 14th century writings of Jean Froissart it celebrates chivalry, Elgar including this quotation from Keats on the score: “When Chivalry lifted up her lance on high.” Whilst an early work the combination of nobility and emotion in the music is unmistakeably Elgar.

Sarah Williamson, a former BBC Young Musician finalist, has performed at major concert halls around the world with leading ensembles including the LSO, the Academy of St Martins in the Fields and the European Chamber Orchestra. She joins us to play Mozart’s exquisite and ever-popular clarinet concerto.

The second is perhaps the best known of Sibelius’ seven towering symphonies. Its 45 minute journey progresses from tentative opening bars through pulsating climaxes, episodes of tenderness and a frenzied scherzo to a blazingly triumphant conclusion. There is so much in this piece that every hearing brings new joys.

All of this music can be enjoyed here on your doorstep in north London.

£18, concessions £15, under 18s £7. Save £1 per ticket by advance booking online.
