We tend to focus on independent businesses here at High Living Barnet, but occasionally a chain opens on our High Street that really makes a mark. When Gail’s opened back in July, not surprisingly, there was a lot of excitement.
Having regularly used the HSBC bank, it feels strange to see the handsome premises transformed into a smart bakery and café. There is little doubting the quality of Gail’s and everything is consistently good – and priced accordingly. However, you feel in safe hands.
The Barnet branch has some outdoor seating and plenty of space inside. There’s also a separate kitchen where you can see the goodies being prepared. As well as the mouth-watering counter, on the other wall you will spot salads, drinks and fresh ingredients in the chill cabinet and shelves with pots of spread and bags of biscuits, crackers and granola. All very tempting and our current favourites include little smoked salmon and avocado yoghurt rolls, excellent cinnamon buns and cheddar and chive drop scones (which I’m nibbling as I write this, thinly sliced and spread with butter).
The range of bread is comprehensive, with the sourdough properly complex and sour. The house coffee blend is full, bright and balanced. I also love the two strengths of hot chocolate, 55 percent for milk chocolate fans and 75 percent if you fancy something stronger.
For fresh, healthy food and drink in a stylish setting, Gail’s is another great foodie option on our High Street (and not surprisingly regularly wins awards).
